BEACH TRIP

On Wednesday Room 2 went to Tangimoana beach. This trip had been postponed from Term 2 when we were learning about endangered animals. One of the ways we thought we could help was to pick up the rubbish from one of our local beaches. We picked up seven bags of rubbish!! We had a great day exploring Tangimoana beach and making huts from driftwood. We also had morning tea and lunch at Tangimoana school which had a fantastic playground. To top off our day Miss McCartin surprised us with an ice-cream at Bulls playground on our way back home! A huge thank you to Mrs Alcock, Mrs Fryer, Mrs Darragh, Mrs Allen and Mrs Christiansen for providing transport and making the day possible!

MUSIC

We are learning to play the piano as part of our music unit. It is quite tricky but we are starting to identify the keys on the piano. Look out for us at the end of the term to hear a song or two on the keyboards!

Scientists!

We have been having lots of fun with our science experiments. We have learnt a lot about what happens when acids and carbonates are mixed together. We can think like a scientist too, predict, observe, explain!

Check out our sherbet and chemical popguns we have made!

FIZZING AND FOAMING

In science we have been learning about reactions! We mixed acids and carbonates together to see what would happen.
To think like a scientist we need to:
·       Predict (what we think is going to happen)
·       Observe (what actually happens)
·       Explain (what we saw and why it happened)

Dance sharing!

We performed our dances in front of the school. We have been working hard on these dances for the last 5 weeks. Our first dance was "Blame it on the Boogie" by Jackson Five and our second was "The Jiffy Mixer", a traditional folk dance. It was great fun and we really enjoyed sharing them with the school!

Inventions sharing!

We shared our inventions with the rest of the school. It was great to share what we had done and to see what others had made too!

INVENTIONS!

We have been working through our design book. As you saw in our previous post, we had planned our first ideas. We have now written a list of instructions on how to play our game and gathered the materials needed.

It was a lot of fun making our practice games but it was hard work!
Once we had finished our games we played it with a buddy. We had to discuss with them what we liked about their game, what we didn’t like about their game and something they could do to improve it.

We are now in the modifying stage of our design process. We are making changes and reflecting on what we are doing all the time so our final game is fantastic!

Alliteration

We have been learning about Alliteration, the repetition of the same initial letter or sound in a series of words. This has helped make our writing more interesting!

We worked with a buddy to think up a silly sentence with each other’s name.

Anna the arty ant
Tommy the tiny tiger
Blake the bouncy ball
Heather the happy human
Will the wicked wizard
Fritha the floaty frog
Kai the kiwi kid
Mataora the mighty monkey
Zoe the zipper zebra
Misty the mischievous mouse

Erika the electric eel
Ru the rattle rebel
Georgia the glamorous gorilla
Manaia the middle mango
India the impressive igloo
Phoenix the physical photo

INVENTIONS

We have started! We are on our way to inventing or adapting our own games! All great inventors start with a plan. Check out our initial thoughts and ideas! We are then going to gather, make, modify and evaluate our inventions. Stay tuned to see our progress…

DAFFODIL DAY

Look at our great outfits for Daffodil Day. We had heaps of fun in the parade!

Discovery Time

As part of our inquiry unit on 'Inventions' we looked at lots of different games. We played each game in groups and then used the ‘Thinking Hats’ to discuss what we liked, what we didn't like and how we could make the game better! We are going to be making our own games and some of us might adapt existing games. It was a fun discovery time!

Thursday, 23 August 2012

On Thursday we had a visit from Turakina Maori Girls College. They performed several waiata for us. We thought their singing was amazing!

Mr Short is an inventor! He has also been making custom built cars for years! He spoke to Room 6 about what it takes to be an inventor. We were then lucky enough to go and see one of his cars!

ART DAY

We had an amazing art morning in the hall with Jane Lloyd. We followed her instructions on how to draw a hedgehog. First, we had to draw our plan very lightly and then we went on to use a black marker. Once we had our outline we used our special pencils to shade in.
It was hard work and it took a lot of concentrating but we loved it!
We can’t wait for you to come into our class and see our final drawings.
